Did you know that in 2007, Great
Britain will be exactly 300 years old? It's true, but there are no official plans to celebrate this
and Mark Allen feels slightly cheated.
I mean last year, the government spent thousands
of pounds commemorating the 200th anniversary of the battle of Waterloo, so how does the birth of a
nation not warrant at least a bit of low-level bunting?
In his debut solo stand up show, Mark looks at whether the
lack of a national birthday party is yet another symptom of the current British identity crisis. So
far, he's been willing to overlook the fact that our monarchy is German, our national motto is French
and our national animal is from Africa - that's just quirky - but when the people of Great Britain are denied a legitimate excuse for a party, the identity crisis has
gone too far.
Since Great Britain was formed, we've had 12 monarchs, 120
colonies and 49 Eurovision entries, so surely it's time for a review. Mark Allen looks at the evidence
and asks the audience to decide for themselves - is Britain indeed still 'Great' or would 'Quite Good'
be more appropriate? |
